Over the past years, technology has been continuously evolving and it has brought about improved graphics, artworks and printing. Newer breakthroughs in technology have also made printing affordable and easy to use.

For photographers too, printing has been made very easy and consultative. More photographers have switched from the old style to the modern enlarged printing with the use of digital inkjet printers.

With the modern use of digital cameras now taking into effect to make perfect digital shots, photographers no longer have to go through the process of scanning of the negatives from the pictures taken This is the one of the main reasons more photographers have switched over to the digital age technology.
Digital image printing is developed in corresponding software such as PhotoShop, CorelDraw and may other types of software. However, among them all, Photoshop is the most commonly used software application to meet the demands of clearer and precise digital prints. In fact, it has now become difficult for photographers to sell the equipment formerly used in the darkroom.

With the growth of printing technology, new issues have also sprung up, such as whether digital printing is really as aesthetic and long lasting. Digital printing has also made enlarging of prints and images much easier than traditional printing. It has been suggested that in time, when digital printing will continue its rise in the world of technology, many will make the switch over from the traditional method to the digital one.

The use of digital printing requires refinement in art skills, and accuracy and precision should be followed and maintained. To enhance printing abilities, the aid of Photoshop, or similar types of software can prove to be very useful for acquiring spectacular prints.

Cyan And Magenta Explained
Moving on to ink cartridges used in printers, anybody who has purchased these cartridges would know that there is no blue or red ink. Cyan certainly looks blue and magenta definitely looks red — but have you ever wondered why they simply don’t call them blue and red instead of cyan and magenta?

Here’s the explanation — both monitors and printers use different ways to produce colour. While a monitor is a light source, printers are light reflecting. The only common ground between the two is something known as dithering. It is the process of approximating a colour that cannot be displayed with uniformly dispersed dots of other colours.

This technique assigns differing colour values to adjacent pixels, thereby reducing the contrast between dots of different colours or shades and generates a more flowing, natural impression. When viewed from a distance, these colours seem to blend into a single intermediate colour. Dithering is similar to the half toning used in black-and-white publications to achieve shades of grey.

Coming back to the discussion, both monitors and printers use primary colours; however, a monitor uses primary additive colours red, green and blue, while printers use the primary subtractive colours cyan, magenta and yellow. In both cases, the primary colours are dithered to form the entire colour spectrum. Dithering breaks a colour pixel into an array of dots so that each dot is either made up of one of the basic primary colours or intentionally left blank to create white.

Cyan and magenta are in fact old printing terms for blue and red, but since some form of differentiation is needed between the additive and subtractive spectrum, cyan and magenta are here to stay!

Are you getting exasperated with all the stacks of negatives and prints warping into unruly shapes and colors that’s been holding your desk drawer hostage but haven’t got the heart to deposit them into the dark recesses of your attic/basement?
Fret no more! By scanning your pictures, you will be given an opportunity to edit and organize your pictures. Once your images are digitized, you can export it into Photoshop to make adjustments. Also, by having your prints or negatives get digitized, you get to archive, e-mail, fax, save them to a CD or even publish them on a website. You may even get to build a photo gallery and let your whole family and friends access them.
Scanning technology has come a long way since being introduced. With only about US$150, you can already have a fine scanner with all the software you need. Of course if you fancy a scanner that handles slides and negatives, you’ll invest a little bit more than this amount.
Before rushing out to buy a scanner, do some research on the gadget, first, like figuring out the features you need and how much you want to spend. Then, know the scanner jargons that describe it’s factors and features. There are two crucial measurements when it comes to scanners – bit or color depth refers to the number of bits of image data the scanner will use for each pixel, and resolution/DPI, which tells you how many spots of information there are in a given area.
You have to consider other features, too. Like the scanner’s speed, ability to scan negatives/slides, software bundles to manage the scanning process, interface between your computer and scanner, and scanner size.
So, now, if you have your scanner already, it’s best to start with a low resolution setting and work your way up from there. The default resolution of 150 DPI might not be a bad place to start. Then, the next important setting is the “output type” which describes what type of image you’re scanning. Save space and time by cropping the pictures before scanning them and closing some other applications on your computers. If you’re having trouble with the scanning software, consult the manual.
To top all scanning basics lessons, remember that scanning is a two-part process. The first part is setting of the resolution and output and making the scan, and the second is saving and editing the file. Saving is an important process and it’s a good option to save your files in BMP or TIFF, especially if you plan to import them into Photoshop for adjustments. Try keeping images bound for website under 40 KB. And for images that you want to print out, save them as TIFF uncompressed or BMP and use a high DPI setting (300 and up) when scanning them.

We owe many coloured and designed papers to this technology, and wouldn’t it be a waste to let go of simple uses of this technology! By taking advantage of them, you may save a lot simply by having your needed colour already in the paper you are using. Solid papers with a slightly different colour than those with traditional white or cream can bring dazzling results for your printout designs.
3.Tinting Your Colours – You can take advantage of this technique by using a variety of tints on one or two colours you are using. Tinting creates an effect of multiple colours since a 10% of a certain colour is different than 80% of it. You can have about 20 different colours simply by experimenting on colour tints!
4.Duotones – Duotone photographs are those that are printed in two colours only. If you experiment enough with duotones, you might come up with subtle effects similar to sepia tones to colourful poster photos.
5.White Text on Solid or Tinted Boxes – Instead of using a different colour for text that is placed inside a solid or tinted box, try white as your font colour. With this technique, you will also be able to use reverse text sparingly.
6. Although rubber-stamping can be a good way to save money, it is a very time-consuming affair. Use your creative skills to innovate rubber stamps, especially if you’re on a scrap-booking project.
7.Laser foil for Your Laser Printer – Many manufacturers produce and sell foils that could go along very well with your laser printer. A few also sell ones that that you can master copy. Copy the foil and use it with a copier on your inkjet printer. However, keep in mind that this can be a time-consuming piece of work.
8.Stickers and/or coloured foil labels – There are various coloured stickers and foil labels on market that you can use to enhance your printed design output. You can also print text onto coloured or foil labels and then stick them in your printed pieces.
9.Creative Scissors and Punches– Scissors and paper punches with unusual edges can be very useful in your low-budget pursuits as they can give your design that creative edge it might be lacking in the end. The scissors can also prove to be a money-saving alternative to costly die cuts.
Save On Printing Cost With Two Inks
Ever wondered if those black and white photographs in the magazines are really composed of only two colours? You might have if you didn’t notice that the colours are sometimes also closer to brown or pale yellow.
There’s an easy and simple way to create this effect ¾ the duotone process.
Duotone (from the word ‘duo’) simply means two colours. This technique is often used to make monochromatic prints. It is done by adding a colour tint to black and white images. Both black and grey ink are used to smooth out or allocate different colours to specific parts, and increase tonal range from lightest to darkest.
Duotone also covers monotone, tritone and quadtone. Monotone (from the word ‘mono’) refers to images that have only one colour; and while tritone images use three colours, quadtone images contain four colours. Both tritone and quadtone images primarily use the Overprint Colours button. This option allows you to control the interaction of your ink.
To give your image the duotone affect in Photoshop, go to Image, then to Mode, and select Duotone. If you are using RGB or CMYK, you’ll have set your workspace to grayscale first. To do so, select Image > Mode and choose Grayscale.
Next, select Image > Mode > Duotone. A dialog box will appear, which will allow you to select the colours you want.
Open the Colour Picker by clicking on the colour swatch. Then, click on the Custom button. A pop-up menu will open, allowing you to select the colour and type of ink.
If you want to modify your work, simply re-open your Duotone dialog box. To do this, go to Image > Mode > Duotone.
Most commonly used duotone combination includes black and yellow; black and medium-blue; black and cyan; and black and brown.
The duotone technique is often used to make black and white images richer. If you compare grayscale and duotone images, you will notice a difference in the colours. Along with adding the accent colour, Photoshop changes the hue of all the pixels.
When you browse through the image details, you’ll find that there is only one channel, even if you’re using two colours. This is so because Photoshop uses Duotone curve. To access Curve, go to Image > Mode > Duotone. The Duotone Curve option is placed on the left of the colour swatch. Click on the box of the ink that you want to edit.
If you want to adjust the colour through Photoshop’s Curve Adjustment, simply select Image > Adjust > Curves. You can also change the tonal value by clicking and dragging on the line or by entering numbers on the field.
Remember, you do not have to limit your combination to black and gray; you can use any two different colours to achieve the duotone effect.

What is PP in Digital Photography?

Of course, we would like to say, that this is PP Group – a leading team in the photography branch, because this is our name! Because we are PP Group. But PP in the Digital Photography means something else.
Our research shows, that most of the people use this abbreviation – PP in digital photography conversations to say the word “Photoshop” shortly. It comes out from the first and the last letters in the word – P. Normally the Photoshop software is in use from the Professional Photography, because it offers a lot of abilities for picture optimization and getting higher images quality.
Another use for PP with the photography stuff is when people are trying to say “Post-Processing” shortly. In this case people are talking about the Post-Processing in Digital Photography or for short: “PP in Digital Photography”.
You can see the PP abbreviation, when it says “Photographic process”. It means the processing, developing photographs. As we understand there is even a book, called this way – “Photographic Processes”, which describes the PP – color-negative / color-reversal processing, shooting and developing photographs. Color and B&W (Black and White) film and print processing, as well.
And talking about print processing we remembered that there is another PP meaning, which is used in digital photography conversations. That’s right! This is the Photo Printer’s stuff or the Photo Paper’s stuff. There are even some printers’ models that are called “(something) PP”. One of them is a Canon’s model. Or photo paper, called “high gloss photo paper PP 101D” or something similar.
May be you will hate us, but we feel the need to share with you, that there is another PP abbreviation and it’s for Pocket Pouch. Believe us – we think that this is not normal too, but it is a fact. The pocket pouches for your digital cameras can be offered in some sites or pamphlets like PP for digital cameras.
Believing or not, but you may see PP like “pages” meaning in Photography as well. There are lots of lessons, courses, lectures and articles that are written on different places – mostly in the internet and they are quotations from some photography books. When it is attended by numbers it is too possible PP to be a page number. Mostly it looks like this way: pp 136-278, and means, as you know – pages 136 to 278.

Time is precious and we don’t want it to slip away that easy without taking advantage of its significance. To circumvent waste of time, Snapshot can be a great help to us.
Snapshot is a valuable technique to save our precious time when working with images in Photoshop – be it an original copy image, something from a digital camera or from a scanned slide or negative. This is usually used to clean up images such as images for publication use.
The technique is so easy, it only involves a four-step method and is easy to recall. You can make use of this in many situations like adjusting levels, color, saturation, sharpness and other corrections without wasting time with layer masks, lasso tools, layers, rubber stamping or magic wand. To ensure that your eyes are fixed to your subject, you can use this method.
Soft-eyes are scanning problems inherent of the natural film curvature while scanning. To avoid soft-eyes problems, use snapshots technique which allows fixation in few seconds. To do this, first open your file. Then go to filter > sharpen > unsharp mask. After that, a dialog box will appear with unsharp mask defaults. Set the default amount to 75 percent, radius to 1 pixel and threshold levels to zero or one. Finally, click OK. You may notice that the entire image has the unsharp mask applied to it beforehand. As a result, it sharpens the overall image.
The texture is no longer as soft as it first appeared. This is the time when the snapshots will save your artwork.
To correct the flaws, you must go to the history palette. If it you did not find it in your desktop, you can find it normally on the right in Photoshop by default. Go to window > Show history. Once you have located your history palette, select the bold arrow-button on its right side. Click and hold it until a menu appears then go to New Snapshot. When you release your mouse, another dialog box will appear. You must enter in it the name “unsharp eyes”, then click OK.
If you have more than one snapshot in a working file, do not forget to label your snapshots to be able to have a better workflow management when it comes to organization of your images. It is nice to do it that way for easy and fast selection and for an efficient scheme.

I like to think of the theme of a website as something that makes the website easily identifiable. It can be a combination of colour patterns, navigation effects, layout…etc that leave a lasting impression on the user. All design elements in the site combine seamlessless to convey a strong message effectively to the user.
Every website needs a theme. When designing a website, it must be build based on a concept or an idea. A good way to start is to come up with a phrase that describe what you want to achieve with the site. It can only be one phrase as short as possible, no cheating. Why only one phrase? Because it forces you to be focused in your design which will eventually make your choice of colors, layout and graphics for your website easier.
For example, if the phrase for an automobile site is “Enduring Passion”, then I will be focusing on the keywords “Enduring and Passion” and I will make sure the meaing of the 2 words are being implemented into my design.
Brainstorming
During the brainstorming process, you try to expand the ideas of the keywords to generate more ideas for your design. The way we think are often moulded by our environment and memories. It is important that you do not stop your flow of thoughts in this stage. Write down what ever that comes into your mind, not worrying whether they are relevant or not. For Example:
Enduring – “Lasting, 3d, Complex, High Tech, Comfort, Excitement, digital…etc”
Passion – “classy, red, pink, bright, clean, elegance, details, light colours, thin lines, curves…etc”
There are no hard and fast rules, just throw in what you can think of. We will try and use these ideas in the next step.
Implementation
Now that we understand the keywords better, we will try to implement these ideas into the design elements of the site. An example is as follows:
a) Looking and Feel: We want the user to feel that they have come to a classy website. So we do not want too many words but strong visuals.
b) Design and Layout: Probably alot of negative space to convey the idea of elegance. Bright, thin borders, nice shadows.
c) Colors: Tints of gray, with black and white to emphasize the idea of elegance. The text will mainly be dark gray on a white background with occasional bolded red, orange or blue to provide contrast.
d) Navigation: Quick navigation with minimal effects.
e) Graphics: Use images that have techie look. To show the idea of “enduring”, we use the images of different sections of the automobile in every page, ie other than the logo and main menu, we want something similar in every page. Maybe use thin lines or 3d drawings to represent technology.
Again, there are no hard and fast rules in this stage. The idea is to let you have a clearer idea of the style you are going after.
Testing
In this stage, you try to create a visual representation of the final homepage in photoshop(or any other software). The end product is just a photoshop file to give you a general idea of how the final homepage might look like. If you like, create another subpage(an internal page that links to the homepage). Stare hard at the final images. Ask yourself whether the layout, colors, fonts, images and navigation reflects on the theme of the website. Once you are satisfied with it, you then need to convert the photoshop file to the actual web page which is another part of the story.
Conclusion
A website with a theme leaves a more lasting impression on the visitors. Many people design websites just to look nice(according to them) but has no theme. For example, many people like to use 3d effects in their navigation or images without asking themselves whether it is appropriate or not.

Even though more and more Internet users switch to broadband every year, a large portion of the web’s population is still running on good old dialup connections. It is therefore unwise to count them out of the equation when you’re designing your website, and a very major consideration we have to make for dialup users is the loading time of your website.

Generally, all the text on your website will be loaded in a very short time even on a dialup connection. The culprit of slow-loading sites is mainly large images on your website, and it is very important to strike a delicate balance between using just enough images to attract your users and not to bog down the overall loading time of your site.

You should also go to a greater length and optimize every image on your site to make sure it loads in the least time possible. What I really mean is to use image editing software to remove unnecessary information on your images, and thereby effectively reducing the file size of your image without affecting its appearance.

If you own Photoshop, it will be obvious to you that when you save an image as a JPEG file, a dialog box appears and lets you choose the “quality” of the JPEG image — normally a setting of 8 to 10 is good enough as it will preserve the quality of your image while saving it at a small file size. If you do not have Photoshop, there are many free image compressors online that you can download and use to reduce your image’s file size.

On the other hand, you can opt to save your images in PNG format to get the best quality at the least file size. You can also save your images in GIF format — the image editing software clips away all the color information not used in your image, hence giving you the smallest file size possible. However, saving in GIF format will often compromise the appearance of your image, so make your choice wisely!

Did you know that Photography literally means “Writing with light?” That is correct. The word “Photo” means “light” and its suffix “graphy” means “writing.” Hence a graphologist is a handwriting analyst. Bet you did not know that. So, effective use of light is at the heart of good photography. With the fancy gadgetry that is overtaking the world of photography, it is time to go back to the basics. Learn that photography is all about using light effectively.

Where am I going with this? Well, I think that with the increased emphasis on the number of MegaPixels and the intellect-snaring delusion that nirvana in photography is achieved by photoshop-ing, we are forgetting the basics. First things first, get the light, right. Should be obvious, right? When you are writing with light, you should be concerned with the quantity, location, nature, and quality of light.

Here are some basics:

1) If shooting a human subject take special care of how light causes shadows on different parts of the subjects face.

2) Be sensitive to “hot spots” being created in different parts of your photograph. Surely you do not want a shiny distractive element in your photo.

3) Look at your complete frame and see how light plays with; either by attenuating or amplifying; different elements. If a background element is being overplayed or under-emphasized, you are doing something wrong.

4) Not all your photography mistakes can be done away with on Photoshop. For instance, an image processing algorithm can never undo the crime of shooting when the color temperature is not appropriate.

5) Use a flash, but only if you have to. And then use a professional flash. The real cheap ones or the inbuilt fluorescent ones will make your pictures look unreal and also make them unappealing.

6) Make use of the best light source — the Sun. Used effectively, it generates the best pictures.

If you have knowledge on the various photo- editing software available, you can easily turn your photos to vintage posters and achieve that old school, reminiscent look. Photo-editing software like Photoshop would help you easily make your photo have that vintage effect that you see in old posters.

Here is an easy guide in creating your own vintage poster.

Preparing Your Image
Choose the image that you would like to turn into a vintage poster. Remove your main subjects from the background. You can use the pen tool or background eraser to do this. The background eraser would let you isolate subjects from the background by comparing the background color from the foreground color. Anything that is in great contrast with the background will not be erased.

For beginners, use a portrait that has as few subjects as possible. Turn the image to black and white. In Photoshop CS or higher, you can do this easily by clicking n the black & white button. If you are using a different software or an older version of Photoshop, you can de-saturate the image and it will give you the same desired effect.

Next, separate your subjects from each other. Do this by using the lasso or marquee tool. Cut and paste each subject on a new layer. Separating your subjects will allow you to work on each subject, without affecting the other layers.

Adding Color

Choosing and adding color on your picture is the most tasking part in this project. When choosing colors, keep in mind that colors effects you see on a vintage poster. Try to use these colors on your images. Remember that you want to achieve a slightly faded but vivid color effect.

Use color replacement or select color range to make your work easier. You can make create another layer, fill it with your chosen color and use masks to hide or show the color. For beginners who are having a hard time finding these options, you can just paint over the parts of your subject. Don’t forget to apply a blend mode for your colors.

Flatten the image or convert it to smart object.

Texture
The most important effect you have to use is the texture effect. Use a texture effect that will give your image a slightly crumpled look. You can choose from the many paper texture effect available in your software. Also, don’t forget to add a little shadow effect and use Gaussian blur filter. Using a blur effect will give you a hand-drawn effect and hide the fine details of your image.

Making the Poster

Copy and paste the edited image on a new file. Use tabloid for the new image size. If you want to have your work printed, use a resolution of 300 dpi and the CMYK color mode, otherwise, you can just use a resolution of 72 dpi and RGB color mode.

Create a back drop that blends well with the colors you used on your image and add a paper texture again on your image. Try to de-saturate the color of your paper texture if it does not go well with the colors on your poster.
